This Book of Common Prayer was dedicated to William IV and is probably the presentation copy to the King. A note at the back of the volume indicates it was a ‘unique copy’. According to an inscription on the flyleaf by Lord Frederick Fitzclarence, William’s third child with Dorothea Jordan, the volume was “always in the King’s Closet at Windsor Castle, & was used by my brother Augustus when reading prayers to our Father during his illness”. The note also reported that Fitzclarence would often find the King reading the book after having met with his Private Secretary, Sir Herbert Taylor. It was bequeathed to Fitzclarence by Queen Adelaide, returning to the Royal Library before 1955.
Solomon Piggott was rector of St Peter's Church, Dunstable from 1824 until his death. In addition to his Book of Common Prayer, he published several sermons and other treatises. Among these, A Father's Recollections of the Three Pious Young Ladies (1831), consisting of sermons and poems written following the deaths of two of his daughters, Mary (1804-22) and Elizabeth (1811-27) and an Elizabeth Brown (1800-22) from consumption, and his 1824 treatise on suicide (Suicide and its Antidotes), brought him moderate attention.
