Head and shoulders of Princess Maud of Wales when a child, surrounded by clouds. A preparatory study for the larger family portrait made for Queen Victoria in 1876, in which Maud sits on her mother's knee and holds a bouquet (RCIN 402328). The Queen's Journal and the Prince of Wales's Engagement Book record that Von Angeli visited Buckingham Palace in April, June and July 1875 in connection with the commission. These studies were painted for the Prince and Princess of Wales and were in the Saloon at Marlborough House.
