Henry de Vere was the Lord Chamberlain of England and Esquire to Charles I when Duke of York. He served as a Captain in Sir Horatio Vere's regiment in Bohemia but died of wounds received at the siege of Breda.
In the 1818 inventory of paintings at Kensington Palace this painting was described as by Cornelius Johnson (which may be an accurate attribution) and as a portrait of the 'King of Bohemia', that is Frederick V (1596-1632), which it certainly is not but which may explain why it joined the collection.Provenance
First recorded in the Queen's Dressing Room at Kensington Palace in 1732, paired off with an unrelated portrait (RCIN 402978, which had been in the collection at least since 1688), as the 'King and Queen of Bohemia'; in this guise the pair remained at Kensington, appearing in the Queen's Closet in the inventory of 1818 (no 200-1) and in Pyne's illustrated 'Royal Residences' of 1819 (RCIN 922154).
