-
Three portraits in the Royal Collection are identified as Frederick II, Duke of Saxe Coburg-Altenburg (RCINs 406404, 406401, 406364). He was born in Gotha, the son of Frederick I of Saxe-Coburg and Magdalena of Saxe-Weissenfels. His youngest daughter, Augusta, married Frederick Prince of Wales in 1736.
The head here is close to that in the full-length portrait by Christian Schilbach in Friedenstein Castle with differences to the position of his right arm. He is depicted wearing an ermine-lined crimson mantle over armour with the riband and the Star of the order of the Elephant; within a painted oval.Provenance
First recorded in Buckingham Palace in 1875 (no 1174)
