Anna Eleonora, daughter of Ludwig V, Landgraf of Hesse-Darmstadt, married, in 1617, George, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg, and was grandmother of George I of England. It was for this reason that she appears amongst the group of eighty-eight miniature portraits of German and other families first recorded in Queen Caroline's Closet at Kensington Palace. The hand of the artist has not been identified; it is certainly below the quality of the full-length cabinet miniature of the same sitter by Friedrich Brentel (420626). Inscribed on the reverse in ink: 'No. 27 Anne Eleonore Duchesse de B et L née Princesse de Hesse'
