Brentel's full-length portrait of Anna Eleonora, Duchess of Brunswick-Lüneburg-Kalenberg serves as a pair to that of her husband, George Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg-Kalenberg (420626). The manner of her depiction, with the prayer book she holds suggesting piety and the small dog symbolising marital fidelity, is entirely conventional for a marriage portrait of this period, but it is not known whether Brentel's image was dependent on an existing full-length oil portrait or whether it was painted from life. Anna Eleonora, daughter of Ludwig V, Landgraf of Hesse-Darmstadt, married George, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg-Kalenberg in 1617. She was the grandmother of George I of England. Signed very indistinctly on the gold border bottom left: Brentel and inscribed on the back in ink, probably by the artist: F. Brentel a: 1630.
