-
Queen Victoria commissioned two miniatures of Prince Victor of Hohenlohe-Langenburg from Guglielmo Faija in April 1855, apparently intending to keep one and to give the other away as a present; this is likely to be the former of the two commissions. Faija based his miniature on an unidentified photograph of c. 1855.
Victor, Prince of Hohenlohe-Langenburg, Count Gleichen, third son of Princess Feodora of Leiningen, Queen Victoria's half-sister and Ernest, Prince of Hohenlohe-Langenburg, served as an officer in the Royal Navy 1848-66. He was appointed Admiral in the British Navy and Governor and Constable of Windsor Castle. He was an accomplished sculptor, responsible for statues of Queen Victoria (Royal Holloway College, Egham, London) and King Alfred (Wantage) and maintained a studio in St. James's Palace for many years.
