Small straight three-edged sword blade, hollow ground and of isosceles section with a narrow, full-length central fuller. Gilt panel at the hilt etched with a circular cartouche framing a crowned monogram of GR and on the inner face, the Stuart Royal Arms. The decoration includes on each face a series of allegorical figures, each identified by an inscription: Justitia, Fides, Spes, and Fortiudo (sic). Struck on the outer face of the tang are the letters W.L, on the forward edge, I XXVIII, and on the rear edge, X. The blade has been broken 7 in. from the hilt and repaired with two bridges riveted across the break on each face.
Provenance
Possibly the 'Three Edged Blade' that had been broken and repaired, described in the Armoury at Carlton House (CH AA 502). Displayed in the North Corridor at Windsor Castle (no. 1508)
