A volume containing 58 plates of views of Venice: the Urbis Venetiarum Prospectus Celebriores by Antonio Visentini after Canaletto in three parts and 20 etchings by Giovanni Battista Brustolon. Bound in very dark green leather.
Two manuscript notes inserted within the volume with the titles of the series by Visentini and Brustolon.
Visentini's Urbis Venetiarum was first published in 1735 with the title Prospectus Magni Canalis Venetiarum, see RCIN 809031.b. Those were 12 paintings of the Grand Canal along with two festivals, etched by Visentini after paintings by Canaletto, commissioned by Joseph Smith, the British Consul in Venice. The Prospectus was then reissued in 1742 with additional plates of canals and major squares and churches in Venice, with the title Urbis Venetiarum Prospectus Celebriores.
The Prospectum by Brustolon, dedicated to the Doge Marco Foscarini, was published by Furlanetto in 1763. It was originally composed of 12 views of Venice: six plates were taken from etchings by Visentini after Canaletto (usually enlarged) and the other six were originally realised for the Prospectum. Those 12 views (six after Canaletto, three after Giovanni Battista Moretti and three unknown) were later completed by the addition of ten more plates after Canaletto and Moretti.
There are 20 prints by Brustolon in this volume. Eight views are taken after etching by Visentini: RCINs 809031.as, 809031.au, 809031.av, 809031.aw, 809031ax, 809031.az, 809031.ba, 809031.bb. Furthermore, two etchings in this volume appear to come from a series of 22 views of Venice and Venetian Festivals by Brustolon after Canaletto or Moretti, published by Furlanetto in 1736 and republished by Vierio after 1791 (Constable & Links, Canaletto, Giovanni Antonio Canal, 1697-1768, 2nd edition, Oxford p. 533 n. 644-645).
The Prospectum was republished by Viero around 1791.
