WENCESLAUS HOLLAR (1607-77)

Chambered nautilus (Nautilus pompilius)

c.1645

RCIN 804564

An etching of a chambered nautilus; first of two states.

Chambered nautilus, Nautilus pompilius Linnaeus, 1758 [Nautilidae; A&D p. 377]. South-west Pacific (though floating empty shells are found as far away as Japan and East Africa), to 150mm, though the banding over the whole surface probably indicates a younger (and smaller) specimen, 100mm or less, as the final section of shell of fully mature specimens is usually unmarked. In the non-Hollar sequence is a polished example of the same species. Copied in the upper half of Buonanni 1.I.1, in reverse.
