MARIA SIBYLLA MERIAN (1647-1717)

Marsh Marigold with the life stages of a frog

c. 1705-10

RCIN 921225

A river flowed in front of Merian’s garden in Surinam. She described how ‘during the rainy season the water rose rather steeply in front of the garden opposite my door, so that many frogs lay on the grass’. She kept tadpoles in a pot to observe their development, making studies of them as they grew into frogs.
