Merian dedicated her great work on the insects of Surinam both to ‘lovers of art’ and ‘lovers of insects’. It was intended to be a beautiful book to appeal to both the non-specialist and the scientific community. The fully etched plates in the book would have been worked up by professional colourists, whereas the ‘de luxe’ versions shown in this exhibition were coloured by Merian herself over lightly etched outlines.
