A rearing horse, and a horse's hind leg
c.1480RCIN 912315
The drawing is probably a study for Leonardo’s unfinished painting of the Adoration of the Magi, now in the Uffizi, Florence. For the crowded composition Leonardo made many drawings of animals: oxen, asses, horses, and even a camel. This study demonstrates close examination of the anatomy of the horse, with the skin both stretched and bunched over the tensed muscles of the shoulder and neck.
