During Merian’s lifetime Amsterdam was both a centre of world trade and a centre of scholarship. As a result it was home to numerous ‘cabinets of curiosities’, collections of natural and man-made objects from all over the world. The ornate lory is native to Indonesia rather than Surinam, and Merian probably saw it in one such Dutch collection.
