It was in this year, during a tour of South Africa with The King and Queen, that Princess Elizabeth made her now famous twenty-first birthday broadcast:
‘I declare before you that my whole life, whether it be short or long, shall be devoted to your service and the service of our great Imperial Commonwealth to which we all belong. But I shall not have the strength to carry out this resolution unless you join in it with me, as I now invite you to do.’
M.W. Elphinstone was connected by marriage to Queen Elizabeth’s sister, Princess Elizabeth’s aunt and godmother (Lady Elphinstone). He became a professional photographer after the First World War.
