This is one of a pair of portraits sent as a gift to Sir Thomas More in England by two of his Netherlandish friends: the humanist and scholar, Erasmus (seen here), and Pieter Gillis, Town Clerk of Antwerp (private collection). Massys depicts Erasmus in his study writing with his favourite reed pen, surrounded by a selection of his numerous publications.
