MAARTEN VAN HEEMSKERCK (HEEMSKERK 1498-HAARLEM 1574)
Jonah Under His Gourd
Signed and dated 1561RCIN 405465
Heemskerck used Rome, with its distinctive aqueducts, as his inspiration to depict the city of Nineveh, threatened with divine vengeance. Jonah is shown under a gourd tree, miraculously provided for him by God and suddenly withdrawn during the heat of the day. God seeks to teach Jonah that trees, like cities and their inhabitants, should not lightly be destroyed.
