SIR PETER PAUL RUBENS (SIEGEN 1577 - ANTWERP 1640)

Portrait of a Woman

c.1625-30

RCIN 400118

It is likely that this unknown woman was a member of Rubens’s own family, possibly his sister-in-law, which explains the intimate, engaging character of the portrait. The bright gold of her dress in contrast with the dark shade of cloak and background makes the figure seem to emerge from the shadows.
