FRANS FRANCKEN THE YOUNGER (ANTWERP 1581-ANTWERP 1642)

The Cabinet of a Collector

Signed and dated 1617

RCIN 405781

‘Cabinets of Curiosities’ were rooms where collectors kept a mixture of artworks and nature specimens. Francken’s careful depiction demonstrates his ability as a still-life painter. To the right, figures wearing donkey-heads (symbols of stupidity) are shown destroying precious objects – alluding to the destruction that occurred during the Eighty Years War.
