Hebron - the town showing the Mosque [Mosque of al-Khalil, also known as the Tomb of the Patriarchs or the Cave of Machpelah]
8 Apr 1862RCIN 2700934
The town of Hebron is believed to contain the tombs of Abraham, his son Isaac and their family. The original tombs were underground burial chambers. On top of this site, different structures have been constructed over the years, with control passing between Christians and Muslims. At the time of the Prince’s visit, the entire Holy Land was part of the Islamic Ottoman Empire. The Prince was given special permission to enter the site, probably becoming the first Christian to be allowed in for centuries.
