Queen Senet, XII Dynasty (c.1985-1785 BC)

c.1985-1785 BC

RCIN 7817

Senet was the consort and mother of two as yet unidentified pharaohs of the XII Dynasty. The two (identical) inscriptions, on either side of her feet, read: ‘An offering which the king gives, (consisting of) a voice-offering of bread, beer, oxen and fowl for the ka (spirit) of the Hereditary Princess, King’s Wife, King’s Mother Senet, true of voice’. This is a standard form of words to provide the spirit of the individual with nourishment. The face, damaged in antiquity, was partially remodelled in the nineteenth century. Acquired by the Prince of Wales in Egypt, 1862
