The palace was built facing out towards the Bosphorus so that the Sultan and his visitors could arrive by boat.
The River Gate (top) is aligned with the main entrance into the grand Ceremonial Hall. The Hall is lit by the world’s largest crystal chandelier, a gift to the Sultan from Queen Victoria. The south entrance (bottom), often known as the Treasury Gate, is the main gateway into the palace gardens.
