Preparatory drawings of rocky terrain
Marco’s closely-hatched drawings of rocky terrain are typical of the Venetian landscape tradition. These two drawings are probably preparatory studies for etchings, with areas of the sheet left unfinished. The twisted tree at the right edge was a common device used by artists to frame or balance a landscape composition.
