SEBASTIANO RICCI (BELLUNO 1659-VENICE 1734)
The Adoration of the Shepherds
c.1723RCIN 403974
Painted with lively brushstrokes, this is a highly finished preparatory oil sketch for Sebastiano Ricci’s full-scale altarpiece in the Cathedral of Saluzzo. Sebastiano was much influenced by his Venetian predecessors Paolo Veronese and Jacopo Bassano, especially visible in the realistic depiction of the shepherds on the left, the farmworker with the ox and the elderly figure of Joseph.
