CANALETTO (VENICE 1697-VENICE 1768)

The Arch of Titus

1742

RCIN 401002

The oldest of the surviving triumphal arches in Rome, the Arch of Titus was erected shortly after AD 81. Through the arch is the wall of the Farnese villa and gardens. Canaletto may have used his nephew Bellotto’s painting as a source for this work as well as a print by Antoine Desgodets.
