CANALETTO (VENICE 1697-VENICE 1768)
The Colleoni Monument in a Capriccio Setting
1744RCIN 404415
In tribute to the architecture of Palladio, Smith commissioned a set of paintings of important buildings and sculpture in Venice to hang above doors in his residence. This painting shows Andrea Verrocchio’s bronze sculpture of the general Bartolomeo Colleoni (1395–1475) that sits in the Campo SS Giovanni e Paolo in Venice. Unlike the real version, Canaletto instead shows it on an extraordinarily high pedestal surrounded by imaginary elements.
