CANALETTO (VENICE 1697-VENICE 1768)

The Grand Canal looking North-West from near the Rialto

c.1726-7

RCIN 406017

The fourth palace along the right bank was Smith’s residence. In 1740 Smith commissioned Antonio Visentini to rebuild its Gothic façade in the Palladian style. After the completion of the works in 1751, Smith asked Canaletto to update his painting. The different style of the façade, with architectural detail incised into the wet paint, stands out from the rest of the painting.
