The influence of Veronese
The work of the sixteenth-century Venetian painter Paolo Veronese was Sebastiano Ricci’s greatest inspiration. He emulated Veronese’s style and made direct copies of his work. These four head studies are taken from the vast painting of the Feast in the House of Levi, which was then in its original location in the refectory at Santi Giovanni e Paolo.
