CANALETTO (VENICE 1697-VENICE 1768)

The Mouth of the Grand Canal looking West towards the Carità

c.1729-30

RCIN 400519

This painting looks in the opposite direction to no. 11. The Canal is busy with traders’ boats and gondolas lined up outside the Dogana. The details of the architecture are modelled in wet paint while the buildings further back are in muted pastel shades, modulated by atmospheric light.
