CANALETTO (VENICE 1697-VENICE 1768)
Title plate with a dedication to Joseph Smith
1744RCIN 807790
Both artist and patron soon spotted the commercial potential of issuing Canaletto’s prints as a published set. This title page was printed in 1744, soon after the appointment of Joseph Smith to the position of British Consul, and was intended to accompany the set of 31 etchings entitled Vedute alle prese da i luoghi altre ideate (‘Views, some taken from nature, others imaginary’).
