ANTONIO VISENTINI (VENICE 1688- VENICE 1782) AND FRANCESCO ZUCCARELLI (1702–1788)
View of the Pavilion or Bagnio at Eastbury
Signed and dated 1746RCIN 404028
This painting celebrating the work of Andrea Palladio is one of the series of overdoors by Antonio Visentini and Francesco Zuccarelli, which probably decorated Smith’s villa at Mogliano. Designed by Sir John Vanbrugh (1664–1726), Eastbury, in Dorset, was begun in 1718 for George Dodington (1662–1720) and continued for his nephew, the politician George Bubb Dodington (1691–1762). It is possible that the Bagnio at Eastbury was chosen as the subject because it was regarded as more Palladian in style than the main house.
