The original drawings by Parmigianino, reproduced here in Zanetti’s woodcuts, were made in pen and ink with subtle washes in neutral tones and white highlights added with a brush. Zanetti’s prints do not attempt to replicate the drawings accurately, but show instead his interest in vibrant and sometimes contrasting inks, such as pink and green, or purple and blue. From about 1730 Zanetti bound his prints as a set entitled the Diversarum Iconum. The sheets exhibited here come from an album that probably belonged to Joseph Smith, with the original wash borders in a tone chosen to match the print.
