CANALETTO (VENICE 1697-VENICE 1768)

A capriccio in the courtyard of a villa

c.1740-60

RCIN 907544

Many noblemen, including Smith who had a small villa at Mogliano, owned country houses on the Venetian mainland. Canaletto made several capriccio drawings based on the pavilions and courtyards of the villas that he drew during a sketching trip along the Brenta in the early 1740s. This sheet shows a courtyard scattered with barrels and pans, conjuring a sense of everyday life.
