CANALETTO (VENICE 1697-VENICE 1768)

A capriccio with a monumental staircase

c.1740-60

RCIN 907564

This sheet is one of Canaletto's largest and most elaborate capriccio drawings. The sharply receding loggia on the left is approached by a succession of staircases leading in all directions. Three monumental urns sprouting foliage dominate the foreground, with a couple standing at the top of the steps.
