CANALETTO (VENICE 1697-VENICE 1768)

A capriccio with the Arco dei Pantani in Rome

c.1740-60

RCIN 907519

Canaletto travelled to Rome early in his career. Although he seems never to have revisited the city, he used Roman subject matter throughout his life, here placing ancient monuments from the Forum in imagined settings. Canaletto used a wide pen nib in the foreground to mark out foliage in thick curlicues, adding to the dramatic sense of overgrowth and decline.
