SEBASTIANO RICCI (BELLUNO 1659-VENICE 1734)

Heads of Christ and St John

c.1725-30

RCIN 403980

The work of the sixteenth-century Venetian painter Paolo Veronese was Sebastiano Ricci’s greatest inspiration. He not only emulated Veronese’s style but made direct copies of his work. These are the heads of Christ and St John at the centre of Veronese's vast painting of the Feast in the House of Levi, which was then in its original location in the refectory at Santi Giovanni e Paolo.
