SEBASTIANO RICCI (BELLUNO 1659-VENICE 1734)

Studies for the drunken Silenus

c.1730-31

RCIN 907024

Joseph Smith owned a large number of Sebastiano Ricci's preparatory drawings. Silenus was the drinking companion of Dionysus, Greek god of wine and festivities. He was often portrayed as a drunken old man supported by satyrs or carried by a donkey. This sketch for a painting of the Feast of Silenus is accompanied by studies of a female figure and Dionysus with a drinking cup.
