GIOVANNI BATTISTA PIAZZETTA (1682-1754)

Two girls with a bird-cage and a youth with a gun

c.1730-40

RCIN 991252

Joseph Smith owned 36 drawings by Piazzetta, including this large sheet with three figures. An allegory for amorous pursuit, the girl looks coyly at the viewer as she holds a bird in its cage, symbolising chastity, while the boy at left carries a hunter's gun.
