CANALETTO (VENICE 1697-VENICE 1768)
Venice: Campo Santi Giovanni e Paolo
c.1735-40RCIN 907481
The view is as if from a first-floor window of a house on the south side of the Campo but altered to avoid extreme perspectival effects. It belongs to a series of ten of churches and squares that Canaletto made in the late 1730s. The drawings are on 'full-size' sheets in almost black ink, with architectural details rendered in fine pen line with some heavier shading.
Canaletto shows the square of Santi Giovanni e Paolo, with the church to the right, the Scuola di San Marco beyond and Verrocchio’s Colleoni monument in the foreground.
