At the centre is the canal of Cannaregio, heading north from the Grand Canal towards the lagoon, and spanned by the Ponte delle Guglie (‘of the obelisks’). At far left is the rear of the church of San Geremia; only its belltower survives, for the church was rebuilt in 1753-60 and its clumsy mass now dominates the waterfront. Abutting the belltower is the classical Palazzo Labia. The painting was altered in 1742 by Canaletto, to add the newly-constructed balustrade on the waterfront with a statue at its corner.
