CANALETTO (VENICE 1697-VENICE 1768)

Canaletto widened the vista to include more of both banks than is visible from a single point. To the left are the extensive offices of the Fabbriche Nuove. Along the right bank run a chain of palaces, including (fifth from right) the neoclassical façade of Palazzo Mangilli-Valmarana, the residence of Joseph Smith, the original owner of all the works in this exhibition. Smith bought the palazzo in 1740, and had the façade rebuilt. He then asked Canaletto to repaint the palazzo here, and the thick paint with deep incisions is clearly visible.
