CANALETTO (VENICE 1697-VENICE 1768)

The Grand Canal looking South from Ca’ Foscari to the Carità

c.1726-27

RCIN 401404

The fifteenth-century Ca’ Foscari, seen in the distance in the previous painting, here occupies the right foreground. In the distance, either side of the masts of a tall ship, are the façade and belltower of Santa Maria della Carità. To the left, brightly lit, is the austere façade of Palazzo Moro-Lin, of unusual width and known as dalle tredici finestre, ‘of the thirteen windows’. Canaletto has widened the canal and straightened the left bank.
