CANALETTO (VENICE 1697-VENICE 1768)

The Grand Canal looking West with the Scalzi and San Simeone Piccolo

c.1726-27

RCIN 407267

To the left is San Simeon Piccolo, still under construction. To the right is the church of the Scalzi; the buildings beyond, including Santa Lucia, were demolished around 1860 to make way for the railway station. The modern footbridge would now span the foreground of the painting. Canaletto condensed the composition by eliminating distant buildings and by narrowing the canal. The two banks were studied separately and seem mismatched, with the right lower than the left.
