The Mouth of the Grand Canal looking West towards the Carità

c.1729-30

RCIN 400519

On the left is the customs house at the eastern tip of Dorsoduro (the Punta della Dogana), built around 1680 as work on Santa Maria della Salute reached completion. Crowning the low tower is a gilded globe surmounted by an allegorical figure of Fortune holding a sail, an appropriate symbol for the customs house of a state whose wealth depended on maritime trade. In the distance the bell tower of Santa Maria della Carità.
