Venice: San Pietro di Castello
c.1735-40RCIN 907485
The church of San Pietro, in the district of Castello in the east of Venice, served as the cathedral of the city until 1807 when it was supplanted by San Marco. The façade received its present form in the late sixteenth century to a design by Palladio, very similar to his Redentore (right). The slightly leaning belltower has since lost its dome, and trees now grow in front of the church, but otherwise the view has changed little.
