GIOVANNI BENEDETTO CASTIGLIONE (1609-64)

An unidentified legendary subject

dated 1660

RCIN 970070

Two soldiers clad in ancient armour drag a corpse back to his family. No literary source for the scene has been identified and it is not impossible that Castiglione invented it. This is the last of Castiglione’s five monotypes in the exhibition, and was created by dabbing ink onto the printing plate with a stiff brush, thus approaching the manner of his oil drawings more closely than the other monotypes.
