Castiglione’s early pastoral landscapes were often conceived of as episodes from the Old Testament, such as the ‘Patriarchal journeys’, though a specific subject is rarely evident. Here the drawing shows the first meeting between Jacob and his cousin Rachel, when he removed a heavy stone from the mouth of a well so that she could water her sheep.
