GIOVANNI BENEDETTO CASTIGLIONE (1609-64)
The Israelites in the Wilderness(?)
c. 1640-45RCIN 903856
This is at first glance just another ‘landscape with figures’, but in the right distance an angel in a column of cloud or fire appears to a group of kneeling figures. Castiglione deploys rhythmical and strongly drawn contours within a composition that is restrained and clear, anticipating much of what was to follow in the 1640s.
