GIOVANNI BENEDETTO CASTIGLIONE (1609-64)
Unidentified subject
c. 1635-40RCIN 903840
The subject has been interpreted as 'The Finding of the Cup in Benjamin’s Sack', but the central figures are clearly unearthing (or burying) a large tripod. Castiglione has assimilated the almost geometrical clarity of Poussin’s compositions, and does not overload the foreground with too many figures; their gestures and expressions are varied and appropriate, with a hint of Raphael’s seminal tapestry designs of a century before.
