GIOVANNI BENEDETTO CASTIGLIONE (1609-64)
Venus and Adonis
c. 1655RCIN 903919
The drawing probably depicts the beautiful Adonis departing for the fateful hunting trip on which he would be killed by a boar, though the attitude of the goddess Venus is unusual – she seems to be looking up in surprise rather than imploring him not to leave. The rapid diagonal hatching gives an impression of silvery light, akin to the best of Castiglione’s etchings.
